The Bile Drain

Sunday night was filled with more than dreams of snow, sledding and a stay-at-home snow day. Sunday night included Micah's bile drain pulling enough that it ceased draining the bile out of his liver into his external drain bag. Instead, bile began to leak around the tube at the insertion site into his abdomen.

We did get to stay at home Sunday night and throughout the morning on Monday. Our boys loved the snow day and seeing all the snow on the ground. However, that familiar call instructing us to head to Duke came at about noon. So Sarah and Micah spent the night at Duke Monday night.

Today at 3:30 PM Micah is scheduled to be put to sleep so they can reinsert the drain tube. And while we had anticipated the surgery to fix the blockage would come after March 16, apparently the latest twist of events and this drain have created a firestorm of activity to get the surgery done soon--possibly this week.

Right now the goal is to schedule him to have surgery either Thursday or Friday. I'd be lying if I said it didn't discourage us or frustrate us. Needing to have this surgery is discouraging and frustrating in and of itself. Micah doing so well, progressing and developing in great ways makes it all the more this way.

But as is true with all of life, you don't always get what you want. It doesn't always happen like you plan. It is what it is...and how we respond to what is remains the key. So once again, as frustrated and discouraged as this has at times made me, I am reminded that when things are good I will praise the Lord; when things are bad, why should I do anything less?

Thank you for praying for Micah. If we can pray for you or minister to you in any way, please let me know.
