Micah had his first follow-up appointment this morning with the surgeon at Duke. While the surgeon was actually in surgery, the surgeon's nurse removed the surgical drain that had been left in when we were discharged. She also removed the bandage and strips covering the incision area. It's so great to hold him now without the fear that you are hurting him or will do something to the drain.
He also had blood drawn today to check the levels of bilirubin. Before surgery and the day of discharge, the total level had been 12. Today's levels showed to be a total of 11. It's a small increment, but it is a hopeful sign. We pray that this is merely the first step in the downward progress toward the normal level (below 1.2). Sarah and I are uncertain whether to be elated by this one point change or not. Regardless, we praise God for the visible result that encourages us.
Next week will be the second follow-up visit. We'll actually take Micah to the gastroenterologist. There is a good possibility that he will want more blood to be taken to check the levels again. Prayerfully, the levels will be even lower, there will be good feedback from the GI doctor and God will continue to be glorified in our lives, proving Himself the Great Physician. Whatever happens, though, He is in control, He is great and He is greatly to be praised.
Thank you for your continual prayers. May you take comfort, refuge and strength from our Lord and Savior who proves Himself faithful and true at all times.
