Patience: What few have and everyone needs

In Psalm 40, David makes a declaration that we often struggle to live out. He says, "I wait patiently for the Lord, He inclined and heard my cry..." That third word is where we struggle. To wait patiently, to have patience, to be a patient person is not the inclination of our hearts or the desire of our flesh. Furthermore, patience is not the message or characteristic the world is promoting these days. Fast access DSL, email on your cell phone so you can get it RIGHT NOW, get rich quick schemes so you don't have to wait to have it all.... We live in a microwave society. We want what we want, when we want it! If it takes longer than 20 seconds, it isn't worth it. At least, that is the way we often operate.

This verse in Psalm 40 keeps coming back to me. In the context, the writer is speaking of waiting for the Lord to bring deliverance and salvation. But we struggle with waiting on the Lord for anything. While God wants us to be patient because He doesn't necessarily operate on our timeline, He is always on time. He may not be early...He is never late...and He is always right on time.

I was reminded of that today. We took Micah this morning. We met with a financial counselor about the transplant. When she shared that the total transplant bill would be about $185,000.00, I nearly wiped the floor with my faint body. But PRAISE THE LORD for the great medical insurance we have through Bay Leaf. There is no cap with our current coverage. If the transplant occurs this year, we've already met our out of pocket deductible, so insurance will cover everything but co-pays. The medicines, post-transplant, could be quite expensive month to month. But nothing close to the $185,000.00. So who could complain!

After this meeting, we were scheduled to have an echocardiogram. Micah was to receive sedation so the sonographer could take better pictures and get a more accurate view of his heart. Because of his liver disease, the doctor gave less than the usual dosage. Then, the nurse rushed in trying to give Micah the medicine. He got a little choked and vomited. Ultimately, he fell asleep but woke up every time the sonographer touched his chest with the probe. Apparently he did not get enough sedation. So we were sent home and we will need to repeat the test. It is probable that he will be put under general anesthesia to have it done. Right now we are waiting to hear how and when.

Thus, I am reminded that I should daily, moment by moment, wait patiently on the Lord. He always answers according to His timing, according to His will and according to our need. He won't be early, He never be late, but He will be right on time.

Please continue to pray for this test and the rescheduling of it. It must take place before the evaluation for being placed on the transplant list can be completed. So pray the doctors can agree on how and when to do this.
